You did everything right in that interview, so WTF happened?

Another week... another dose of job search advice they don’t teach you in school.💡

(You probably know me from one of my freebies (resume templates, interview prep, questions to ask your interviewer), or maybe from social media. 👋🏾

Thanks for being here!

Lately, I’ve been talking to a ton of hiring managers who’ve had to make tough calls between equally qualified candidates.

The one thing that edges out the best from the best? Their ability to clearly articulate relevant business impact in every story—and their answers are succinct.

If you’re landing interviews and prepping like crazy but still not landing offers, it’s worth revisiting your answers.

Ask yourself: What’s the "so what" of that 5-7 minute answer you just gave? And btw, if your answer is surpassing 5 minutes, you’re heading into 'eyes glazing over’ territory with the interviewer. 👁️👁️

Here's a before-and-after example.

"Tell me about a time you managed a tough project."

Before:

Situation: Our team was tasked with launching a new CRM system on a tight deadline.
Task: I was responsible for coordinating with sales, marketing, and IT to ensure a smooth rollout.
Action: I set up weekly cross-functional meetings, identified potential bottlenecks, and adjusted timelines to keep the project on track.
Result: We launched the system successfully with no major delays.

After (with Business Impact):

Situation: Our company was transitioning to a new CRM platform, and I was leading the rollout.
Task: I had to align sales, marketing, and IT while managing tight timelines.
Action: I introduced weekly syncs to address blockers early and kept all teams aligned on priorities and milestones.
Result: The rollout went smoothly, improving CRM adoption by 30% within the first 3 months and reducing lead response time by 15%, leading to faster deal closures.

Why the second version hits harder:

  • Tangible impact: The narrative is now tied to the broader business goals.
  • Clear improvement: Shows how your work improved something and drove results.
  • Memorable ending: The kind of answer that gets brought up in hiring huddles.
👉 Hit reply and tell me how you would answer this question. I’ll let you know if there’s enough business impact!

I've been on all sides of the table and have seen firsthand how tough it can be to break into corporate and thrive in it without proper mentorship.
